Serres county has a rich history, starting from ancient times and through a long journey, which numbers the periods: Archaic, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, Revolution of 1821, Macedonian, Balkan Wars,  first and second World War, and today it constitutes one of the cores of the economic, cultural, and tourist development of Greece. It is also the entry point of Greece into the northern and eastern European states.

The reputation of monuments, sights and areas of particular beauty have surpassed the boundaries of the county and are known all over Greece.

Amphipolis is one of the most important sites in the area since it is a remarkable archaeological site with the recently inaugurated Museum, with unique valuable archaeological finds. In the archaeological site of Amphipolis there is the “Leon of Amphipolis” symbol of pride and guard of the ancient city. The visit to the Archaeological Site and the Museum can be combined with a visit to the Cave of Alistrati.

Of minor importance is the archaeological site of Terpni, next to Nigrita. The visit can be combined both with balneotherapy in adjacent Jamaican springs of Therma  and with the folklore events of Gerakini.

The Orestis Tower on Koulas Hill, which for years now stands majestically at the top of the city, testifies its  presence over the years.

The visitor can admire the wetlands of Lake Kerkini, the beautiful forests of Lailias, the unique architectural, religious and historical value temples and monasteries, remarkable monuments of Byzantine art, as well as the Turkish monuments such as Bezesteni in the city center, the Tzindzirli Mosque and the Ahmed Pasha Mosque, while excellent impressions will be created by wandering the natural beauties in the areas of Agios Ioannis, Agioi Anargyroi and Xrysopigi.
